Women’s Group Therapy
So many women feel isolated in their struggles; group work normalizes our experiences and allows us to find strength in a shared identity so that we might start making positive changes in our lives.
When considering group therapy, many women find it hard to keep an open mind. Some may have encountered betrayal early in life, perhaps at school, by other young women, or even later in life, by other adults. Some may feel a sense of shame, however unwarranted, about their thoughts or behaviors. For many, simply the idea of meeting new people and navigating a new situation in an unfamiliar environment creates untold anxiety.
However, in my experience, having run such groups for over 25 years, the very reasons people avoid group therapy are the same reasons the group experience can be so powerful. Learning to trust other women can be healing. Honestly sharing and finding validation of our feelings can be empowering. And challenging anxiety and shame in a safe and supportive environment can be freeing.
